How does Ducted Air Conditioning Work?

A ducted system consists of an outdoor unit, an indoor unit, and one or more electric heating and cooling coils.

A system of ducts is installed in your ceiling cavity and circulates cool or warm air throughout your home via vents.

You can set different room temperatures thanks to zoning and a programmable control panel.

Steps for Installing Ducted Air Conditioning

Before the ducted air conditioning installer sets up your new system, you can do a few things to prepare and avoid costly mistakes:

  1. Installers use drop sheets, but we recommend you drape dust covers over your furniture and furnishings to protect them from plaster dust or sawdust.

  2. Decide on the location of the controllers, i.e. the family room. However, check with the installer as they may recommend a different place based on where they’ll run the cabling.

  3. Decide on the location of the outdoor condenser. The best place is away from your – and your neighbours' – bedrooms and outdoor living areas. But, aim to keep it as close as possible to the switchboard.

Installation Day

If you’ve got Hello Breeze installing a ducted air conditioning system, the installer will turn up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at the time you set.

Step 1

Step1: for Installing Ducted Air Conditioning

Your ducted air conditioning installer kicks things off with a detailed inspection of your roof cavity. Then they’ll consult with you to ensure you’re happy with their planned location for the indoor unit, ducts, internal vents and outdoor unit.

The ducted air conditioning installer positions the outdoor unit before running the refrigeration pipes and the electrical cables connecting to the indoor unit.

Step 3

Disassemble the indoor unit

They disassemble the indoor unit into three parts to fit into the ceiling cavity. These components include:

  1. The air mixing plenum
  2. The fan deck
  3. The fan coil unit

The indoor unit is suspended from the roof structure to eliminate vibrations through the ceiling. Once in place, the installer will mount a safety tray underneath to catch discharge fluids. They then run the safety tray drain and the condensate drain out to the roof gutter.

Step 5

The installers cut holes in each room for the air vents. They’ll then lay and connect the air ducts to the vents and the air mixing plenum on the indoor unit.

Control cables run between the zone motors and wall controllers.

This is the final step for installing ducted air conditioning. The installer will switch the system on and check the functionality thoroughly. Once she’s good as gold, they will:

  • Take all their rubbish with them. And won't leave dirty footprints behind!
  • Provide a certificate of compliance upon completion; and
  • Give you a full product demonstration, so you’re good to go!
