What is Ducted Reverse Cycle Air Conditioning?

Ducted reverse cycle air conditioners consist of two units. An internal one tucked inside the roof cavity of your home and an external unit that sits outside.

A refrigeration cycle cools or warms the air and delivers it via a series of ducts until finally blowing the air out through vents in each room.

One of the niftiest things about ducted reverse cycle air conditioning systems is zoning. Zoning control allows you to adjust the temps and airflow of each room individually.

So, let’s say you’re about to leave work, and the day is hotter than a flat-screen telly in a pawn shop. Grab your phone and tap the MyAir Zoning app. Then, simply switch on the AC in your living room so you waltz into a nice, chilly icebox.

Ducted reverse cycle air cons cool down rooms quickly in any kind of climate - particularly humid areas.

Which is sweet news for Brisbanites.

What’s the Difference Between Ducted and Split System Air Conditioners?

Split system air conditioners also consist of two units. An indoor evaporative heat exchanger mounted on your indoor wall and an outdoor condensing heat exchanger.

No doubt you’ve seen them around – they’re the most common type in Australia. These are a great, energy-efficient option if you have a small home or need a unit for just one room.

Split systems are a tad cheaper and easier to install than ducted air conditioning systems.

But, they aren’t ideal for large rooms, double-storey properties, or homes with a flat roof. Plus, if you’re looking to deck out more than one room in your home with AC, it’s more economical to go with a ducted system.

How does Ducted Reverse Cycle Air Conditioning Work?

Here’s a simplified breakdown of the process in cooling mode:

The Evaporator

A blower sucks out the warm air from inside your home and draws it into the evaporator coils inside the indoor unit.

These coils contain low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs the heat from the air and turns it into a high-pressure gas.

As the warm air passes over the evaporator coils, it cools and then distributes deliciously chilled air throughout your home via vents.

Compressor

The high-pressure refrigerant gas transfers to the compressor in the outdoor unit. There, the gas is pressurised and condensed into a liquid.

Condenser

The liquid refrigerant rushes onto the condenser’s coils. Then, a fan-forced operation expels the heat into the ambient environment.

Next, the refrigerant is transferred back to the indoor unit and absorbs heat from the living environment.

And the cycle repeats.

What are the Pros of Ducted Air Conditioning?

  • Discreet installation—only grilles and controller visible.
  • Saves wall space
  • Cleaner air
  • Silent operation
  • Services the entire house, but zoning allows each room to maintain different settings
  • Maintains an even temperature
  • Energy-efficient, saving on energy usage costs
  • Adds value to your home
  • With regular servicing, your system should last at least 15 years
